Do you remember playing with your mother’s button box, jar or tin? Have you ever wondered how old buttons are and how many centuries they existed before they were useful? Can you guess why they were banned or why there was a button war?
Button collectors consider buttons miniature works of art. They enjoy them for their pretty faces, shapes and designs. But the history that comes along with these practical little items is a fascinating part of collecting, too.
Button collecting got its start during the Great Depression because it was a hobby that just about anybody could afford during those lean times. Collections could be started with finds at home in their own saved button jars and tins.
The Hernando County Button Collectors Group and the Hernando County Library System invites you to celebrate National Button Day with them at a presentation at the Spring Hill Branch Library at 9220 Spring Hill Drive on Friday, November 20 at 10:30 a.m. Sylvia Durell will present on the history of buttons and the hobby of button collecting. The 50-minute talk will finish with Anne Buckingham showing a variety of buttons and discussing the materials from which they are made. The library will also feature a display on button collecting in its lobby.
